BTW, I hate "bullet sponge" difficulties, since they often just make an easy task longer to complete and nothing more. It worked, and it turned out to be one of my favorite games last year when I played it, because I died a ton before I beat it. For Day's Gone as an example, I learned enough about its difficulty in advance where I chose to never use any of the health perma-boost items to ensure I was always weak enough to be scared to die (even though the hardest difficulty was selected). For some games, I make it artificially harder just to satisfy that struggle-to-win urge. I want to die a hundred times in order to force me to improve my skills, strats and tactics.Īs soon as I find out a game is easy with no way to increase its difficulty (looking at you, Outer Worlds), I just skip it altogether. Why do I like difficult games? I don't feel I've "earned" the victory of beating it if I don't struggle hard to get to the end. I almost always choose the toughest difficulty possible in genres I'm familiar with. It's only when you start playing more and learning the nuances of the various games that you can appreciate why they do what they do If you just jump in, and they're not your thing, they just come across as painful to play. If you don't have the tolerance it just comes across as hot, but as you build that up you can start tasting and appreciating the flavors. It's not about whether you like spicy food, it's more about why people enjoy spicy food. It's more an explanation of the mindset behind why devs create these types of games and why players enjoy them. This isn't necessarily an argument for difficulty settings, or accessibility or any of that. I've timestamped the section (if it doesn't work, jump to 30:43) I like a decent challenge in my games and I like spicy food as well so it really resonated with me. It's a few minutes long section so I can't really quote it, but it is truly the best analogy I've heard to explain it. But that's really just a setup for his analogy of the enjoyment of difficult games to the enjoyment of spicy foods.
